Glucomannan also causes food to be dispersed into your body for energy more slowly. In one study conducted in 2005 by the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York along with The Institute of Clinical Medicine at the University of Tromso in Norway, researchers showed that glucomannan had significant effects on weight reduction, for all of these reason just mentioned.

During the study, it was proven that glucomannan increased body weight reduction when accompanied by a low caloric diet and exercise. This dietary fiber is normally packaged in gel capsules to be taken orally. The glucomannan manufacturers claim that consumers should ingest 2 to 3 capsules (providing 2 grams of glucomannan fiber) 30 minutes before a meal so that the glucomannan can swell in the stomach and cause the stomach to feel full. This fullness is supposed to help curb your appetite and help you to eat less at your next meal.

Despite these claims, glucomannan cannot work effectively when delivered in this form. The problem with taking glucomannan as a capsule is that the powder does not actually get released completely in order to expand in your stomach. Instead, gastric juices and acids break down the capsule walls slowly, and fluid from your stomach seeps in little by little. As the fluid comes into contact with the glucomannan, it causes the fiber to swell inside the capsule, which is still partially intact. Since the fiber forms a thick gel when mixed with water, the partially encapsulated fiber becomes a glucomannan "fiber worm." Now, this isn't a parasite, it's simply the result of the expansion of glucomannan within the capsule to form a long, thin, worm-shaped gel. So, instead of swelling in your stomach to make you feel full, the fiber swells inside the capsule and passes through your digestive tract without performing its designated job.
